What we do

Put simply: we enjoy opera

The Cheltenham Opera Society was founded in 2007 by Robert Padgett and others with the following objectives:

-To provide opportunities to increase the members’ knowledge and enjoyment of opera.

-To arrange lectures, discussions and other meetings about opera and visits to operas.

-To listen to opera recitals, live or recorded.

-To give opera lovers the opportunity to meet socially in pursuit of these objectives.

What we do

Visit opera houses

We arrange visits to opera houses, mainly to Garsington, Welsh National Opera (WNO) and English Touring Opera (ETO) productions.

Sometimes we organise a coach and have a meal together before the performance.

Watch recorded performances

Members meet occasionally to watch recorded opera performances.

Learn more about opera

We arrange talks from experts often related to current or future productions.

A recent examples was a talk by Simon Rees on Madama Butterfly

Share knowledge

Some of our members are very knowledgeable about opera, others less so. We share information in informal discussions
